Vikes dominate Capilanos at home to secure playoff hosting rights

Mar. 28: Victoria Vikes 45, Capilano RFC 7 (Wallace Field, UVic)

VICTORIA, B.C. – In their final CDI regular season home game at Wallace Field, the University of Victoria Vikes men's rugby team defeated Capilano RFC, 45-7, on Mar. 28. With the win, the Vikes capture home field advantage going into the first round of playoff season, slated for Apr. 25.

"I think we did a good job of stepping up on defence today," said Doug Tate, Vikes men's rugby head coach. "We hung in there and the boys did well to bounce back from our 7-7 tie early in the second half, capitalizing on [the Caps] turnovers."

The opening half saw both teams engage in a relentless physical affair, making scoring attempts difficult on either side. However, the Vikes got on the board after 13 minutes of play as second year Connor Liewellyn snatched the ball from a Capilano turnover to touch down for the only try of the first. Fullback Fergus Hall successfully made the convert to give the Vikes a 7-0 advantage.

Both teams were unable to reach the line for the rest of the half. The Vikes kept their 7-0 lead entering halftime after missing two long-range penalties.

Pace picked up quickly entering the second half as Capilano fullback Tom Turner earned the visitors their lone try after a neat set of swift passes. Captain Chris Robinson secured the convert to put the teams even at 7-7.

The Vikes got back in the driver's seat as Doug Fraser sped down the sidelines four minutes later, offloading to winger Kane Wyatt for their second converted try of the game. The Vikes gained a 14-7 lead.

The Capilanos responded pushing deep into the Vikes end but a loose pass put UVic back in possession. The Vikes duo of veterans Remi Anctil and Fraser contributed in penetrating the ball forward, helping Dustin Dobravsky and Macbryan Bos earn one unconverted try each for a 24-7 UVic lead.

Turnovers continued to wreak havoc for the Capilanos. Nathan Yanagiya and Roddy Carroll made efforts to move the ball near the line, but they were held back by the Vikes solid defence. Capitalizing on turnovers, Liewellyn made another steal and bolted down from half the pitch to score his second try for the Vikes at the 60th minute mark.

Up by 31-7, the Vikes utilized their speed-savvy skills to dominate the rest of the game. Fifth year Dobravsky tallied his next two consecutive tries, while Hall completed the converts in the 45-7 win.

Up next, the Vikes will be travelling to Vancouver for their final regular season game against the UBCOB Ravens on Apr. 11.
