Men's Rugby By Cameron Doherty, Vikes Communications

PREVIEW: Vikes will try to get momentum back in game against Westshore

Oct. 29: Vikes men’s rugby vs Westshore Valhallians (2:45 p.m. Brentwoodf College School, Victoria, B.C.)

Tale of the Weekend

VICTORIA—With five games left to go in their Island Premier season the Uvic Vikes find themselves in unfamiliar territory.

The perennial Barnard Cup contender's head into their weekend game against the Westshore Valhallians with a record of 1-3. The game is scheduled for a 2:45 p.m. start at the Brentwood College School.

With the Vikes currently sitting in third place in the Island Premier standings they are in danger of missing the Barnard Cup final, a trophy they have won the last two years in a row.

Westshore and the Vikes have played once already this season, UVic won that game 46-29 on the strength of four tries from fourth-year Isaac Kaay.

"We need to start off the way we did when we played them last time and keep that going for the full 80 minutes," said Vikes assistant coach Rick Farrally.

"Last time we let them back into the game. We took our foot off the gas pedal big time and let them have some pretty easy tries."

Last Time Out

Both of these teams are coming into the weekend after losses in their most recent games.

A second half come back was too little too late for the Vikes last weekend as they fell to the Castaway Wanderers 43-34. Five different Vikes scored a try in the game but they couldn't fight their way back from a 29-8 half time deficit.

Westshore was shutout in their game last weekend, falling to James Bay 29-0. The Vahallians are 0-4 on the season.

By the Numbers

2: The number of times Westshore have been held off the scoreboard this season.

46: The number of points UVic scored the last time these teams met, the most they have recorded so far this season

Coach's Take
Rick Farrally, Vikes assistant coach

"The team is a little bit impatient with our results so far. There is a long way to go before the Barnard Cup final so hopefully we can put it together by then."

"We are working this week on our defence, so hopefully that will show on the weekend. We just have to be stiffer and more aggressive, we are giving up too many chances at our goal line."
