Tale of the Weekend
VICTORIA—The Vikes men's soccer team will head out on their longest road trip of the season when they travel to Alberta to play the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns and the University of Calgary Dinos September 24 and 25.
The last time the Vikes faced the Pronghorns was in 2013. On that night in Victoria the Vikes easily handled Lethbridge, defeating them 4-0.
It was a dramatic affair the last time the Vikes met up with the Dinos. Victoria needed extra time to win 2-1 in a 2013 Canada West final six match up.
Last Time Out
The Vikes had a strong weekend to finish off their four-game home stand. The Vikes offence came to life in a 4-0 win over the Winnipeg Wesmen. Although they lost their second game of the weekend 3-2 to the undefeated Alberta Golden Bears, Victoria showed great resiliency in battling back to force a nail-biting end of the game.
The Pronghorns struggled in the last two games that they played, falling to both UBC Okanagan and Thompson Rivers University at home. Lethbridge currently sits in fourth place in the Prairie Division, with seven points from eight games.
The Dinos split their matches last week. Falling to UBC Okanagan on a last minute goal before rebounding to defeat Thompson Rivers 4-2. The Dinos sit in third place in the Prairie divison with a record of four wins and two losses.
By the Numbers
7: The number of goals Dinos forward Dominic Russo has scored this year. Good enough for second best in Canada West.
4: The Pronghorns are a young team, they have only four players in their fourth or fifth year of eligibility.
5: The number of penalty kick the Vikes have earned through six games this season.
Coach's Take
Bruce Wilson, Vikes head coach
"We are right there in our conference. There's not a lot of difference between the very best teams and the teams that are towards the bottom of the league. We know that we are competitive with anybody and this is a chance for us to put some points together."
"The players have worked hard. I I'm very pleased with what we have. People are now starting to get fitter and better. Also our injured players are coming back. So hopefully, as we move ahead towards the second half of the year we will put some points together."
