VICTORIA – A second half in which the UBC Thunderbirds scored 31 points was too much for the UVic Vikes men's rugby team to overcome in a 51-14 loss on January 21 in Vancouver.
A game that was close until halftime took a turn for the worse for the Vikes when a yellow card and injuries put the team from Victoria under extended pressure according to Vikes head coach
Doug Tate.
The Vikes defence managed to bend but not break until the final twenty minutes of the game when UBC found the space to run the ball in for multiple tries.
Morgan Tate and
James Pitblado crossed the try line for the Vikes while
Guiseppe du Toit was good on both conversions he attempted in the game.
The loss not only saw UBC capture the prestigious Wightman Boot Trophy for the fourth year in a row but also started the Vikes 2017 B.C. Premier League campaign on a losing note.
