VICTORIA – The B.C. Premier League season isn't off to the start the UVic Vikes men's rugby team would like, after they dropped a close 17-15 game to Capilano RFC in Vancouver on January 28.
 
The loss drops to Vikes to 0-2 on the season, with their other loss coming at the hands of their bitter rivals the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds.
 
The Vikes were able to put a lot of pressure on the Capilanos but were stymied by an outsanding defensive effort from the Vancouver squad according to Vikes head coach Doug Tate.
 
James Pitblado scored a try and also knocked through a convert to lead the Vikes in scoring, Jonathan Lorimer added another try while fourth-year Vike Fergus Hall was good on a penalty.
 
The Vikes defence stepped up big time from the 51 points they surrendered to UBC one week ago but the team was unable to capitalize on all of their scoring chances according to Tate.
 
Despite the loss, Tate praised the performance of his players with multiple Vikes missing out on the game due to either injury or commitments to the Canadian National Team.
 
On February 4 the Vikes will get the opportunity to record their first win of the season when they host another one of their long-time rivals, the James Bay Athletic Association, at Wallace Field.
 
The Vikes and James Bay have met three times already this season, with the teams splitting the games evenly 1-1-1.
