PREVIEW: Vikes back in action against Burnaby Lake

Nov. 25: Vikes men's rugby at Burnaby Lake (Burnaby, BC)

Tale of the Weekend

VICTORIA – Fresh off an outstanding run at the Canadian University Championships, the UVic Vikes men's rugby team will have to refocus on the B.C. Premier League when they travel to the Lower Mainland to battle third-place Burnaby at 2:30 p.m. on November 25.

Burnaby Lake is currently on a four-game winning streak and their 6-2 record has them challenging for top spot in the competitive league, they sit just eight points behind the first-place UBC Old Boys Ravens.

Through eight games the Vikes sit ninth in the B.C. Premier League, holding a record of 2-6. Earning six of a possible eight bonus points so far this season has the team just two points behind Seattle for seventh.

Burnaby denied the Vikes a spot in the playoffs the last time these teams met when they defeated UVic 41-26 in the final regular season game of 2016-17.

Last Time Out

A successful outing at the revamped Canadian University Championships last weekend ended with silver medals for a Vikes team that staked their claim to being one of the elite programs in the nation.

The Vikes began their tournament with a 95-0 shellacking of the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers and then scored a last-second try to tie the Guelph Gryphons 11-1 to qualify for the championship game on point-differential. A 37-12 loss to UBC denied the Vikes the National Championship, but the team still showed well at the first 15's university championship since the late 1990's.

Burnaby Lake picked up a close 24-22 win over the fourth-place Castaway Wanderers last weekend and with the win the team has not lost in Premier League action since September 30.

By the Numbers

13: The number of different players who scored a try for the Vikes in their win over UPEI.
135: Burnaby Lake has allowed the second-fewest points in the league.
