LANGFORD –  Day 1 of the Rugby Canada University Sevens Championships in Langford couldn't have gone much better for the three teams submitted by the University of Victoria, as the Vikes went 9-0 and outscored their opponents by a total of 328-17.
 
The men's and women's varsity teams went 6-0 on the day, beating up on their opponents by a margin of 215-5. The only team to score against one of UVic's top teams on Friday were the Calgary Dinos women, Canada West champions and national bronze medalists.
 
The women's team started the day off with a 19-5 victory over Calgary, avenging a loss in the final Canada West sevens tournament that allowed the Dinos to go on to claim the banner. After that, the Vikes didn't allow a single point against, beating York 46-0 before going on to turn down the Cougars 43-0 to close out the day.
 
Madeleine Graham led the Vikes with five tries for 25 points while Gurpreet Dhaliwal and Gabriele Senft added three and two tries, respectively. Jess Neilson made four converts on the day and added a try to finish with 13 points.
 
The top men's squad didn't allow a single point against on the day to quick off their quest for a fifth straight Canadian University Sevens title. They opened the day with a 22-0 victory over UBC Okanagan before knocking off Mount Royal 54-0 and Regina 31-0.
 
The men's Norsemen squad also had a day to remember, going 3-0 with victories over Alberta, Trent and Saskatchewan. The squad beat Alberta 31-7 before winning 45-4 over Trent and 37-0 over the Huskies.
 
Day 2 in Langford kicks off at 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning with the first quarter-final of the day. The women will start off against rivals Guelph at 9:22 a.m. while the men will face Regina at 10:06 a.m. and the Norsemen will face off against UBC Okanagan at 9:22 a.m.
