VICTORIA - A dominant 2-0 victory over the UBC Thunderbirds capped off a perfect weekend for the University of Victoria Vikes men's soccer team, as they won their 15th Keg Spring Cup title inside Centennial Stadium on March 24-25.
The Vikes struck early in the championship game, when
Ian Whibley tallied his second goal of the tournament on a Vikes counter-attack after a rare UBC foray into the Vikes penalty area.
A solid Vikes defence led by centre-backs
Logan Fisher and
Evan Libke as well as tenacious midfielder
Austin Schneebeli remained steady the rest of the way, limiting any serious UBC challenges to
Jasdeep Lally in the Vikes net.
Just before the final whistle,
Isaac Koch doubled the Vikes lead with an outstanding, curling, free-kick.
Koch struck the ball from around 20-yards away from the net and managed to get it over the wall and past a helpless UBC goalkeeper before the ball slammed against the underside of the crossbar and bounced across the goal line to cement the Vikes victory.
The team booked their ticket to the championship game with a shutout victory of 1-0 over the Fraser Valley Cascades on March 24. In total, the Vikes allowed zero goals against over their two games while scoring three.
The Vikes women had a more volatile time in the tournament, finishing in third place after recording one win and one loss.
In their consolation final, the Vikes fell behind early before roaring back to claim victory over the UBC T-Birds.
Kiara Kilbey and
Natalie Cavallin tallied goals in the game as the Vikes came out on top by a score of 2-1 over their rivals from the Lower Mainland.
The Vikes ended up on the consolation side of the draw after falling 2-0 to the Alberta Pandas who would go on to defeat the Trinity Western Spartans in a penalty-shootout to claim the women's title.
