MONTREAL – The 14-8 result was not indicative of how much the University of Victoria Vikes controlled their semifinal tilt against the Queen's University Gaels.
In a rematch of last year's semi, the Vikes reversed the outcome on Friday morning at Sherbrooke Field and are headed back to the gold medal game for the first time in two years.
The No. 3 seeded Vikes dominated the first half. Aside from a 45-second drive midway through the opening frame, the ball was predominantly in the Gaels' zone.
Bringing the pressure early, the Vikes could have easily been up a couple of scores, but knock-ons and penalties inside scrums halted lengthy drives.
Even when they turned it over, the Vikes got the ball back rather quickly, as they did a great job shutting down the first punch of attack by the Gaels.
Swirling winds in the end zone twisted
Jenner Teufel's penalty goal attempt wide right 10 minutes into the first half.
Off a lineout just before half, captain
James O'Neill spotted a dashing
Tom Heuser. The Chilliwack native busted through a wall of Gaels with blazing speed and tumbled in for the try. After further referee review, they determined that Heuser landed on his back, meaning the ball was held up and the try was overturned.
Kicking into the wind early in the second half, Dylan Young of the No. 2 ranked Gaels pushed his penalty goal wide right as well.
Logan Martin-Feek single-handedly broke up a Gaels drive, busted three tackles and dashed 55 yards for the opening score six minutes into the second half. Even kicking from a sharp angle, Teufel navigated the windstorm to split the uprights.
Young missed his second penalty goal nine minutes into the second half after the Vikes went offside.
Following the missed kick, the Gaels produced a powerful one-man run by their fullback, but
Liam Morrison mad the great open-field tackle to save the day.
The Gaels maintained possession and used a series of rucks to work their way to the middle of the field before eventually finding Joshua Engelbrecht for the try. Young missed his third kick of the day, as the Vikes held onto the 7-5 lead.
The Vikes earned their second held-up call of the game in the second half after the Gaels turned it over with a knock-on deep in their zone. The Vikes reset the play five yards out and Heuser was looking for his second try of the game, but he fumbled the ball forward inches away from the try line.
Minutes later,
Thomas Di Fiore checked in and provided a spark off the bench. The Montreal native forced a break in the line and plunged the ball deep into Gaels' territory. The Vikes learned from their previous mistakes and didn't rush to gain a few yards. Eventually,
Jonas Robinson punched in their second try of the game with seven minutes remaining in regulation. Teufel provided some insurance by connecting on the convert to make it a two-score game.
With one minute remaining, the Gaels opted for the penalty goal to bring it back within seven. Young converted his first kick, but it wasn't enough, as the Vikes grinded out the final 60 seconds.
The Vikes will compete for the gold medal on Sunday (1 p.m. ET / 10 a.m. PT) against the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds. The webcast will be available on
the Stingers website.
