Basketball set to tip off against TWU, UBC

Langley & Vancouver, B.C. – For the first time since the 2019-20 season, the University of Victoria men's and women's basketball teams hit the court for Canada West play, taking on Trinity Western University and the University of British Columbia on the road, Oct. 29-30.

FAST FACTS
  • Both the men's and women's squads will open the season Oct. 29 at Trinity Western, followed by a road contest at UBC, Oct. 30.
  • In the conference, the Vikes men were picked to finish third by the league's coaches, while the women were slotted seventh in the league.
  • UVic's men's team finished the 2019-20 campaign with a 15-5 Canada West play record, including clinching the program's first postseason win since 2015.
  • The women's team finished with a 12-8 mark in Canada West play, and made an appearance in the quarterfinals of the Canada West tournament.
  • Matthew Ellis returns to the Vikes for the 2021-22 season, who led UVic with a 14.6 points per game average, as well as a 1.2 blocks per game average. In addition, Ellis is the only returning Vike to have been selected a Canada West All-Star in 2019-20.
  • Ashlyn Day, a 2019-20 Canada West Second Team All-Star, returns to help guide a young Vikes women's team in 2021-22. Day had a team-best 16.4 points per game scoring average, and also averaged 4.8 rebounds per game in 2019-20.
  • Last time against Trinity Western, the Vikes women fell to the Spartans, 68-64, while the men defeated TWU, 91-82, Feb. 8, 2020 in Langley.
  • In their last meetings against UBC, Jan. 18, 2020, the Thunderbirds came away with victories in both games, defeating the Vikes women, 74-66, and the men, 87-77.
