Vikes drop overtime heartbreaker to Spartans in season-opener

Langley, B.C. – Despite a seven-point comeback in the final minutes of the fourth quarter, the University of Victoria women's basketball team fell to Trinity Western University, 73-66, in overtime, Oct. 29 at the Langley Events Centre.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Quarter – UVic 18, TWU 17
  • Back-and-forth for the first points of the game, the Vikes and Spartans traded runs until the score was 8-8 with roughly five minutes left to play in the opening frame.
  • After the Vikes would go up, 14-10, the Spartans would complete a seven-point run to re-take the lead, 17-14, with just over a minute left to play in the first quarter.
  • The Vikes would finish the opening 10 minutes in front, 18-17, on an Ashlyn Day jumper at the buzzer.
2nd Quarter – UVic 27, TWU 23
  • Scoreless to open the second, neither team found the basket for the first two minutes of the quarter. The Spartans would be the ones to break the drought, taking a 19-18 lead with just over seven minutes to play in the half.
  • Both sides increased their point tallies with free throws, with TWU still holding a 21-20 lead on the Vikes.
  • The Vikes' first three of the game from Day would be followed by buckets from Mimi Sigue and Calli McMillan would give the Vikes the 27-21 lead, with six points being their largest lead of the contest.
  • The Spartans would knock down the last shot before the end of the half to send the game into the break with UVic in front, 27-23.
3rd Quarter – TWU 44, UVic 43
  • Controlling the start of the second half, the Spartans went on an 11-0 run over the first three minutes of play to take a 34-27 lead.
  • Sigue would find the Vikes' first basket of the half, which TWU would match in their next possession to maintain a seven-point lead, 36-29.
  • Pushing their way back, the Vikes would make five free throws (three from Day and two from McMillan), as well as use two Day jumpers to take the lead back, 38-37, with just over four minutes to go.
  • After a quick back-and-forth would find TWU back in the lead, Tana Pankratz would knock down a shot to bring the Vikes back even at 42-all.
  • Ending the quarter on free throws from both sides, the Spartans would make two to the Vikes' one to carry a one-point lead, 44-43, into the final quarter.
4th Quarter – UVic 60, TWU 60
  • The Spartans would hold a steady lead for the majority of the fourth quarter, countering any Vikes' scoring runs with ones of their own, eventually holding a 56-49 lead with just over three minutes to play in regulation.
  • McMillan swung the momentum back to UVic with a huge three-pointer with three minutes to go. Four made free throws from Day and Pankratz in the next two Victoria possession would tie the game, 56-56.
  • Pankratz would make her next two free shots to put UVic in front, 58-56, with just over one minute remaining. TWU would then make a pair of their own to tie the game, 58-58.
  • Getting a crucial stop in the final 30 seconds, McMillan dribbled the ball up the floor and swung it to Aleah Ashlee, who sunk her shot from the block to put Victoria up, 60-58, with three seconds to go.
  • A TWU timeout would give the Spartans the in bound on their side of the floor, and the Spartans would make the put-back at the buzzer to send the game to overtime, 60-60.
First Overtime – TWU 73, UVic 66
  • Unable to get anything going in overtime, the Spartans jumped back out to a five-point lead, eventually leading 67-62 with 2:30 to play.
  • A pair of free throws from Day would cut TWU's lead to three, 69-66, but the Spartans would close out the point scoring and add four more points to earn the win.
WORTH NOTING
  • Day led the Vikes' scoring effort, tallying 24 points, including going 11-for-14 from the free throw line. Day added four rebounds and a team-high two assists to her line.
  • McMillan and Pankratz finished with double-digit point totals at 12 and 10, respectively.
  • Sigue led the way on the boards, grabbing a team-leading 10 rebounds in addition to her five points.
  • With the win, the Spartans have now won six of last 10 matchups between UVic and TWU.
