Vikes put up 72-point effort to open Canadian University Men's Rugby Championships

Kingston, Ont. – Putting on a high-powered offensive showing, the University of Victoria men's rugby team defeated Dalhousie University, 72-0, in the Canadian University Men's Rugby Championship quarterfinals, Nov. 24.

HOW IT HAPPENED
4th Minute – UVic 7, Dalhousie 0
  • Jonas Robinson broke away down the right side, keeping the ball in to touch it down for the try and to put the Vikes on the board.
  • Despite the ball bouncing off the post, Ethan Smith made his first conversion attempt of the night.
15th Minute – UVic 12, Dalhousie 0
  • Carter White, aided by the forward pack of the Vikes, added a try to extend the Vikes' lead.
17th Minute – UVic 19, Dalhousie 0
  • Finding the ball in mid-air off a bounce, Robinson proceeded to break through up the middle to touch it down for his second try of the match.
  • Smith made his second convert of the night for two more points.
21st Minute – UVic 24, Dalhousie 0
  • Being chased by Dalhousie, Noah Bain barrelled down the right side, touching the ball down before the defenders could get to him for the UVic try.
26th Minute – UVic 31, Dalhousie 0
  • Receiving the ball in the midst of Dalhousie defenders, the seas parted for Gabriel Casey to score his first try of the match.
  • Smith was successful on his convert attempt.
30th Minute  – UVic 38, Dalhousie 0
  • Adding one more before the half, Denver Fatt found his way to the try zone for the score.
  • Smith made his fourth conversion of the night to send the game to halftime.
33rd Minute – UVic 43, Dalhousie 0
  • Opening the second half scoring, Graeme Norris managed to touch it down off the pick-and-go to extend the Vikes' lead.
35th Minute – UVic 48, Dalhousie 0
  • Playing edge-to-edge, continuity from the Vikes saw the ball find its way to Marcus Lott, who touched it down near the left post for his first try of the match.
37th Minute – UVic 53, Dalhousie 0
  • Ethan Hager scored a quick-response try for the Vikes, marking his first try of the season.
47th Minute –UVic 60 Dalhousie 0
  • On a launch from the preceding scrum, Christopher Gamage weaved his way through the Dalhousie defenders for the try.
  • Austin Pinnell made his first kick of the night for the extra points.
51st Minute – UVic 67, Dalhousie 0
  • After Spencer Cooper forced a turnover, he found Ryder Heaney-Corns, who touched it down between the posts for the try.
  • Pinnell made the kick from the middle for two more points.
57th Minute – UVic 72, Dalhousie 0
  • The Vikes added one final try on a sliding effort from Nathan Bice
WORTH NOTING
  • UVic's 72 points are the most scored by the Vikes in a game this year. In addition, UVic exceeded its previous season-high of 36 points during the first half of the match.
  • The Vikes tallied six tries in each half for 12 total on the night. Moreover, the Vikes' 12 tries were scored by 11 different players.
  • Robinson's 10 points rank third among all players at the CUMRC after the first day of competition.
  • On the convert side, Smith scored a game-high four, while Pinnell added two in the second half.
  • The Vikes' 72 points mark the most scored by any team in the opening round of the Canadian University Men's Rugby Championships, besting UBC's 66 in the first match of the tournament. 
  • Victoria shutout its opponent for the first time this season, previously holding an opponent-low of 22.
