Kingston, Ont. – The University of Victoria men's rugby team returns from the Toronto Arrows Canadian University Men's Rugby Championships with silver medals, as the Vikes fell to mainland rival University of British Columbia, 39-7, in a snow-filled gold medal match, Nov. 28.
HOW IT HAPPENED
3rd Minute – UBC 5, UVic 0
- The Thunderbirds would score the first try of the game to open the scoring.
25th Minute – UBC 8, UVic 0
- UBC would add a three points on a penalty goal to take an eight-point lead into the halftime break.
33rd Minute – UBC 13, UVic 0
- Opening the second-half scoring, the Thunderbirds would add a try to their lead.
39th Minute – UBC 20, UVic 0
- A try, along with the 'Birds' first successful conversion of the afternoon, would give UBC the 20-point lead.
44th Minute – UBC 20, UVic 7
- Putting the Vikes on the board, team captain Jonas Robinson managed to breakaway, sliding to cross the line and touching it down for UVic.
- Christopher Gamage was successful on his convert to add two points for the Vikes.
50th Minute – UBC 27, UVic 7
- Adding a try and conversion, UBC pushed its lead back to 20.
58th Minute – UBC 32, UVic 7
- The Thunderbirds would register another try to continue to pull away.
60th Minute – UBC 39, UVic 7
- Adding one final set of points as time expired, the 'Birds scored the try and convert to close the game.
WORTH NOTING
- UBC's game-opening try in the third minute marked the Vikes' first time trailing all tournament.
- Robinson finished as the Vikes' scoring leader at the CUMRC, notching four tries for 20 total points over three matches played, a figure which also ranked fifth among all players at the CUMRC.
- Since the inception of the CUMRC in 2017, the Vikes have appeared in the gold medal match every season.
- UVic finished the fall 2021 campaign with a Coastal Cup record of 1-5, and 2-1 mark at the CUMRC.
