Vikes fall to Pride in 2022 opener

VICTORIA - Second-half scoring by the visiting Pacific Pride was enough to separate them from the University of Victoria Vikes, who fell 36-22 to the Rugby Canada Development team, Jan. 29 at Wallace Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
9th Minute - Pride 7, UVic 0
  • The Pride would strike first. After being stopped repeatedly by the Vikes in previous plays, the Pride broke through for the first try and conversion of the match.
15th Minute - UVic 7, Pride 7
  • Following a Vikes lineout, Lachlan Kratz received the ball and proceeded to touch it down among a swarm of Pride defenders for the Vikes' first points of the game.
  • Christopher Gamage was successful on the convert to tie the game, 7-7.
26th Minute - Pride 14, UVic 7
  • The Pride would regain the lead on a try and convert.
31st Minute - Pride 14, UVic 12
  • Finding a response, Andrew Easson found an open lane and sprinted down the right side of the field for a try, and to bring the Vikes within two.
33rd Minute - Pride 21, UVic 12
  • A costly turnover for UVic, the Pride would take advantage of the Vikes' misplay to score a quick try and subsequent conversion.
37th Minute - Pride 21, UVic 17
  • Nathan Yue would make it a one-score game, pushing through oncoming defenders down the left side to score his first try of the match and pull the Vikes within four heading in to the halftime break.
42nd Minute - Pride 24, UVic 17
  • Opening the second-half scoring, the Pride would send the ball through the uprights on a penalty goal attempt for three points.
49th Minute - Pride 31, UVic 17
  • Taking their first double-digit lead of the afternoon, the Pride would claim all seven points on their next scoring opportunity to extend their lead.
61st Minute - Pride 31, UVic 22
  • Breaking the Vikes' second-half scoring drought, Brenning Prevost found himself wide open and in position to intercept a Pride pass. With open space, Prevost barrelled down the right side for a try.
80th Minute - Pride 36, UVic 22
  • Adding one final score before time expired, the Pride were able to breakthrough the Vikes' repeated obstructions for five more points.
WORTH NOTING
  • Similar to the fall season, the Vikes shared the scoring wealth as four Vikes found the end zone on four different try opportunities, while five total Vikes scored points on the afternoon.
  • UVic now sits at 0-1 on the 2022 spring season.
