VICTORIA – The University of Victoria women's basketball team fell in its home-opener, 78-57, to the University of Winnipeg, Nov. 11 at CARSA Performance Gym.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Winnipeg jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the opening quarter before a layup from Brooklyn White, jumper from Kate Johnson, and pair of free throws from Ashlyn Day tied the game for the Vikes, 6-6, with 6:20 to go in the first quarter.
- A 14-0 Wesmen run helped the visiting side hold a 23-8 lead at the end of the first 10 minutes of play.
- Johnson put the first points of the second quarter on the board, scoring a layup 11 seconds in to bring the score to 23-10 in favour of Winnipeg.
- Winnipeg kept their distance for the remainder of the frame, taking a 44-24 lead into the halftime break.
- Nearly even in the third quarter, the Wesmen outscored the Vikes, 19-18, en route to holding a 62-42 advantage after 30 minutes of play.
- Cutting in to the deficit, a layup from Mimi Sigue brought the Vikes within 13, 70-57, with 5:48 to go in the final quarter.
- Winnipeg would hold out for the remainder of the game to take the win, 78-57.
WORTH NOTING
- Abigail Becker led the Vikes with 20 points on the night, adding six rebounds and a team-high two blocks to her stat line.
- Day recorded her second double-double of the season with 13 points and a team-leading 10 rebounds for the Vikes.
- Johnson added the final double-digit scoring performance for Victoria with 12 points, adding three rebounds and a Vikes-high five assists.
- The Vikes drop to 1-2 with the loss, while Winnipeg remains unbeaten at 3-0.
