VICTORIA – The University of Victoria women's basketball team emerged victorious in its rematch against the University of Winnipeg, 86-84, Nov. 12 inside CARSA Performance Gym.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Grabbing an early advantage over Winnipeg, Ashlyn Day gave the Vikes their largest lead of the first quarter with a three, 11-7, with 6:08 to go.
- Going back-and-forth for the remainder of the first, Winnipeg held a slim, 27-25 lead after the opening frame.
- Back-to-back three's from Tegan MacKinnon gave the Vikes a six-point lead, 34-29, with 5:36 until halftime.
- Using the momentum to their advantage, the Vikes used a 23-5 run over the final eight minutes to take a 50-34 lead into the halftime break.
- Mimi Sigue stretched the Vikes' lead to 19, 57-38, via layup with 7:57 to go in the third quarter.
- Victoria held a 71-60 advantage over the Wesmen through three quarters of play.
- While Winnipeg fought back in the fourth and outscored the Vikes, 24-15, UVic held on to claim the win, 86-84.
WORTH NOTING
- The Vikes held the Wesmen to just seven points in the second quarter.
- As a team, the Vikes were 11-for-20 from beyond the arc at the half and finished 13-for-26 overall (50%).
- MacKinnon was 7-for-10 from three at the half. She finished the night with 23 points, three rebounds and two assists.
- Day led the Vikes with 31 points in the win, adding three assists and two rebounds.
- The Vikes' 33-for-68 shooting marked their best percentage of the season (48.5%).
- Victoria improves to 2-2 with the win, while Winnipeg suffers their first setback of the season and moves to 3-1.
