Edmonton, Alta. – In it until the very end, the University of Victoria women's basketball team fell to the University of Alberta on a last-second three-pointer, 67-64, Nov. 18 at Saville Community Sports Centre.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Back-and-forth for the majority of the opening frame, the Pandas took an 8-0 run to grab a 19-14 lead with 1:27 to go in the first.
- A three from Brooklyn Walbaum brought the Vikes within one, 19-18, at the end of the first.
- While Alberta stayed in front for most of the second quarter, a three from Tegan MacKinnon tied the game at 32 all with two minutes to go.
- Outscoring the Pandas 22-16 in the second quarter, the Vikes held a 40-35 lead at the end of the first half.
- A reverse of the second quarter, the Vikes were in front for the first eight minutes of the third, before an 8-0 Pandas run put the home side back in front, 52-51, at the end of the quarter.
- Matching basket-for-basket to start the fourth quarter, it was Alberta that broke away to take a six-point lead, 62-56, with 1:25 to play.
- With 36 seconds remaining, Ashlyn Day knocked down a three to tie the game back up, 64-64.
- With the Vikes unable to score on their final possession, the Pandas scored a three at the buzzer to claim the 67-64 win.
WORTH NOTING
- MacKinnon went 4-for-4 from beyond the arc, finishing with 12 points for the Vikes.
- Kate Johnson led UVic with 19 points, also tallying a team-high five assists in addition to four rebounds.
- Abigail Becker notched a double-double with 10 points and team-high 12 rebounds.
- Brooklyn White recorded 10 rebounds and a team-leading four steals for the Vikes.
- The Vikes move to 2-3 on the year, while the Pandas improve to 4-1 overall.
