VICTORIA – A final-quarter comeback effort pushed Trinity Western University over the University of Victoria women's basketball team, 73-70, Nov. 25 at CARSA Performance Gym.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Trinity Western took an 8-0 lead over the first four minutes of play before Ashlyn Day put the Vikes on the board with a layup with 5:54 to go.
- Controlling the remainder of the first, the Spartans held a 17-7 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.
- Starting the second quarter on a 10-0 run, a layup from Kate Johnson tied the game at 17 all with 7:48 to play.
- Taking their first lead of the night, a layup and pair of free throws from Johnson followed by a three from Tegan MacKinnon put the Vikes ahead, 24-21, with 6:11 to play.
- Outscoring TWU 34-12 in the second quarter, the Vikes took a 41-29 lead into halftime.
- A scoreless final four minutes of the third quarter for the Vikes allowed the Spartans to close the gap, however, UVic managed to stay in front, 55-46, after 30 minutes of play.
- Trinity Western opened the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run, pulling within three, 58-55, before a three from Day pushed the Vikes' lead back out to six, 61-55, with seven minutes to go.
- While Brooke Kendal tied the game with a layup, 70-70, the Spartans went ahead by three with 10 seconds to go and held on for the 73-70 victory.
WORTH NOTING
- The 34 points scored in the second quarter are the most in a single quarter for the Vikes this season.
- Day led the Vikes with 25 points on the night, adding six rebounds to her performance.
- Johnson finished with 17 points, also securing team-highs in assists (4) and steals (3).
- Brooklyn White grabbed a Vikes-high nine boards.
