Lethbridge, Alta. – The University of Victoria women's basketball team nearly completed the comeback effort but ultimately fell to the University of Lethbridge, 72-71, in their season-opener at First Choice Savings Centre, Nov. 4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A Kate Johnson jumper followed by an Ashlyn Day jumper and three-pointer gave Vikes their first lead of the game, 7-6, with 7:41 to go in the opening period.
- Going back-and-forth with the Pronghorns in the first 10 minutes, a free throw from Johnson and an and-one from Mimi Sigue put the Vikes up by four, 24-20, at the end of the first quarter.
- Lethbridge opened the second quarter on a 13-0 scoring run, and finished the period with a 40-36 lead at halftime.
- The home side continued to stretch their lead in the third, with the Pronghorns holding a 61-48 advantage after 30 minutes of play.
- Beginning a comeback in the fourth quarter, a three-point play from Day with just over six minutes to go pulled the Vikes within four, 64-60.
- A jumper from Johnson brought the Vikes within one, 72-71, with 54 seconds to play, however, neither team would score in the final seconds, giving the Pronghorns the win.
WORTH NOTING
- Day led the Vikes with 28 points and nine rebounds in 33 minutes on the floor.
- Johnson had 13 points, seven rebounds, and team-highs of five assists and four steals in her Vikes debut.
- Sigue added a double-digit scoring performance, notching 12 points in the season-opener.
- The Vikes start the season 0-1, while Lethbridge holds a 1-0 mark after the first game of the year.
