Lethbridge, Alta. – The University of Victoria women's basketball team claimed their first win of the 2022-23 season, defeating the University of Lethbridge in comeback fashion, 71-69, Nov. 5 at First Choice Savings Centre.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A layup from Mimi Sigue gave the Vikes their only lead of the first quarter, 3-2, with 8:25 to play.
- Lethbridge held a 22-15 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.
- The Vikes went on an 11-0 run over the final two and a half minutes of the second quarter to take a 31-29 lead at the half.
- Despite Lethbridge having the lead for most of the third quarter, Ashlyn Day knocked down two three's in the final two minutes to put the Vikes ahead, 48-47, at the end of the third quarter.
- A layup from Sierra Reisig with 6:10 to go in the fourth quarter gave the Vikes their largest lead of the game, 59-49.
- Lethbridge would use the next four minutes to take a 65-59 lead with 2:20 to play.
- The Vikes regained the lead, 69-67, on consecutive layups from Day and Kate Johnson, but a Pronghorns bucket tied the game back up, 69-69, with 35 seconds to play.
- With 12 seconds to go, Day scored her 34th point of the contest via layup to seal the win for the Vikes, 71-69.
WORTH NOTING
- Day led the Vikes with a double-double performance, notching 34 points and 14 rebounds in the win.
- Sigue and Abigail Becker added double-digit scoring performances with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
- Johnson recorded five assists to lead the Vikes, adding four points in the win.
- The Vikes and Pronghorns both hold records of 1-1 after the first weekend of Canada West play.
