VICTORIA – Opening its split-opponent weekend, the University of Victoria women's basketball defeated Thompson Rivers University, 81-56, Feb. 11 at CARSA Performance Gym.
SHOOTING FOR THE CURE
Raising money for the Canadian Cancer Society during the annual U SPORTS "Shoot for the Cure" campaign, the Vikes used tonight's game to collect "Stats for the Cure," thanks to a generous donation from Heart Pharmacy. Earning $500 for every made Vikes three-pointer and free throw, and $100 for every Vikes rebound, UVic raised $15,200 after recording nine made three-pointers, 10 free throws, and 57 rebounds in the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Quarter – UVic 29, TRU 8
- The Vikes were firing right out of the gate, going on a 19-0 run to open the game. UVic did not concede a basket to TRU until there was 4:07 remaining in the first, leading 19-2.
- An Aleah Ashlee jumper, followed by back-to-back three's from Calli McMillan and Hannah Walline made it 27-2 for UVic with two and half minutes to play in the opening frame.
- The Vikes led 29-8 at the end of the first, holding their opponent to single-digits in a quarter for the fourth time this season.
2nd Quarter – UVic 45, TRU 26
- UVic would open the second quarter much like the first, holding the WolfPack scoreless over the first nearly four minutes, building its lead to 35-8 with just over six minutes to play.
- TRU would begin to chip away at the sizeable lead in the final three minutes, cutting the Vikes' lead to 45-26 at the end of the second half.
3rd Quarter – UVic 60, TRU 48
- UVic would hold a steady, 20-point advantage for the first five minutes of the quarter.
- However, the WolfPack would use a 15-3 run over the next three minutes to cut Victoria's lead to 11, 57-46 with two minutes to go in the third.
- The Vikes would hold a 60-48 lead after 30 minutes of play.
4th Quarter – UVic 81, TRU 56
- Rebuilding their lead from the start of the quarter, the Vikes would register 12 unanswered points to start the fourth, taking a 72-48 lead over TRU with 6:30 to play.
- Cruising to the finish, the Vikes came away with the 81-56 win over the WolfPack.
- UVic held Thompson Rivers to just eight points in the fourth quarter, doing so for the second time in the same game after holding the WolfPack to eight in the first.
WORTH NOTING
- The Vikes' 29 points in the first quarter marked the most in a quarter for the Vikes this season, previously recording 27 in the third quarter at UBC, Oct. 30.
- UVic held its opponent to single-digit scoring in two quarters in the same game for the first time this season, holding TRU to eight points in the first and fourth. The Vikes held the WolfPack to single-digit scoring in one quarter in both previous matchups this season (five, Jan. 28 and nine, Jan. 29).
- Three Vikes finished with double-doubles in the win, with Ashlee recording a team-high 19 points and game-high 11 rebounds to lead UVic.
- McMillan followed with 16 points and 10 boards while also dishing a team-high five assists, while Mimi Sigue tallied 10 points and 10 rebounds in the win.
- Victoria improves to 9-4 on the season and completes the regular season series sweep over Thompson Rivers, going 3-0 against the WolfPack in 2021-22.
