Vikes suffer setback to Cascades

VICTORIA - The University of Victoria women's basketball team was defeated for the first time in 2022, as the University of the Fraser Valley came away with a 68-54 win at CARSA Performance Gym, Feb. 12.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Quarter – UFV 19, UVic 10
  • Fraser Valley would jump to a quick lead, holding a 12-3 advantage with just under six minutes to play in the first.
  • After chipping back to pull within seven, 15-8, both sides went on a scoreless streak for over two minutes, resulting in no score changes.
  • UFV would break the scoring drought, taking a 17-8 lead. Both sides would add one more bucket before the horn, with the Cascades holding a 19-10 lead after the first quarter. 
2nd Quarter – UVic 30, UFV 28
  • Aleah Ashlee put the Vikes on the board in the opening possession, sinking a jumper to bring the Vikes within seven, 19-12.
  • Scoring the next six points of the game, UVic forced a UFV timeout with just over seven minutes to play in the half, bringing the game within one, 19-18.
  • Out of the timeout, the Cascades built their lead back to seven, 27-20, with under five minutes to play.
  • A pair of free throws from Mimi Sigue, followed by a layup from Karsen Look, would gives the Vikes a 30-28 lead at the half.
  • Victoria outscored Fraser Valley 20-9 in the second, the sixth time this season it has held an opponent to a single-digit scoring quarter.
3rd Quarter – UFV 48, UVic 41
  • A 9-0 run by UFV opened the third, with the Cascades taking a 37-30 lead with seven minutes to play and forcing UVic to take a timeout.
  • Ashlee would bring the Vikes back within two, 42-40, via jumper.
  • The Cascades would use a 6-1 run to close the quarter, holding a 48-41 lead after 30 minutes of play.
4th Quarter – UFV 68, UVic 54
  • Look notched the opening points of the final quarter, knocking down a jumper to make it 48-43 in favour of the visiting side.
  • With seven minutes to go, Calli McMillan scored a three to bring the Vikes within three, 52-49.
  • However, the Cascades would end UVic's threat and pull away, coming away with a 68-54 win.
WORTH NOTING
  • The loss snaps the Vikes' seven-game win streak, bringing the Vikes to 9-5 on the season.
  • Ashlyn Day led the Vikes' offensive production with 21 points, collecting 12 of those on her perfect night from the charity stripe (12-for-12).
  • McMillan tallied 16 points in the loss, and also added four rebounds.
  • Ashlee and Meike Boerstra led Victoria with six rebounds each, while Ashlee added six points to her stat line on the night. 
UP NEXT
UVic and UFV will meet again next weekend, with the two sides meeting in Abbotsford, B.C. for a pair of games, Feb. 18-19.
