Abbotsford, B.C. - Despite valiant comeback attempts, the University of Victoria women's basketball team was unable to overcome the University of the Fraser Valley, falling 71-44 and 71-57, Feb. 18-19 at the UFV Athletic Centre.
Game one: Fraser Valley 71, Victoria 44

HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Quarter – UFV 19, UVic 12
- Opening the game with consecutive three's, Ashlyn Day and Calli McMillan knocked down back-to-back shots from beyond the arc for a 6-0 Vikes lead.
- The Cascades would be quick to respond, scoring six of their own to tie the game, 6-6, with just over six minutes to go in the opening quarter.
- After an Aleah Ashlee three for the 9-6 UVic lead, an 8-0 UFV run made it 14-9 for the home side with three minutes to play.
- Continuing to hold its lead, the Cascades would have the 19-12 lead at the end of the first.
2nd Quarter – UFV 35, UVic 24
- Both sides struggled to find offense to start the second quarter, with no change to the score over the first two minutes.
- After UFVÂ put the first bucket on the board, McMillan would immediately respond with a three to make the score 21-15 with 7:45 to play.
- Back-to-back three-pointers from Day brought the Vikes within four, 25-21, with just under six minutes until halftime.
- A 10-0 UFV run added to the home side's lead, 35-22, with a minute and half remaining in the quarter.
- Scoring the Vikes' first two-point basket of the night, McMillan would make a layup at the buzzer to make it a 35-24 game at the half.
3rd Quarter – UFV 50, UVic 34
- McMillan grabbed the first Vikes points of the quarter, with her three making it a 10-point game, 37-27, with eight minutes to play.
- The Cascades would rewiden its lead with a 7-0 run, holding a 44-27 advantage with six minutes to go.
- Unable to make up any more ground, the Vikes trailed UFV 50-34 after three quarters.
4th Quarter – UFV 71, UVic 44
- The Vikes put the first points of the quarter on the board for the first time since the beginning of the game, with Meike Boerstra knocking down a jumper, 50-36.
- UFV continued to grow its lead, having a 63-41 advantage at the halfway mark of the quarter.
- Scoreless for four minutes, Brooklyn White added a point for the Vikes with a free throw, making the score 64-42 with two minutes to go.
WORTH NOTING
- The Vikes struggled from inside the arc early on, not making its first two-point basket of the game until the final seconds of the second quarter.
- Of the Vikes' 13 total field goals on the night, nine were from three-point range.
- McMillan and Day finished with 13 and 11 points, respectively, while each adding two rebounds and two assists to open the weekend.
- Ashlee tallied 11 points, while tying for the team-high with seven rebounds and three assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Quarter – UFV 17, UVic 10
- Holding an early advantage, a three from Ashlyn Day gave the Vikes a 6-3 lead with 7:30 to play in the opening quarter.
- After a pair of free throws from Aleah Ashlee made it 8-3, the Cascades came back with five unanswered points to tie the game, 8-8, with just over five minutes to go.
- Finishing a 9-2 run over the final half of play, the Cascades took a 17-10 lead at the end of the first.
2nd Quarter – UFV 34, UVic 21
- The first points of the quarter went to the Cascades, who took a 10-point lead on a three-pointer, 20-10.
- Adding a pair of baskets, UFV took a 24-10 lead with six and a half minutes until the half.
- Day would knock down a three to put up the first Vikes points of the quarter and make it 24-13.
- After trading baskets to bring the score to 26-17 for UFV, the Vikes pulled within five on a layup from Mimi Sigue, and fastbreak from Calli McMillan who found a waiting Aleah Ashlee for the score to make it 26-21 and force a Cascades timeout with 3:30 to go.
- A pair of free throws and a three from UFV brought the home side's lead back to 10, 31-21, and the Cascades would add one more three to make it 34-21 at the half.
3rd Quarter – UFV 46, UVic 36
- Over a minute and a half would pass until the first points of the second half were scored. Beginning with a bucket by UFV, Day immediately responded with a three to make the score 36-24 with eight minutes to play.
- A couple quick baskets from the Cascades would give the home side a 41-27 lead, but an and-one from Sigue made it 41-27 with seven minutes to go.
- After nearly three scoreless minutes from both sides, UFV would end the drought with a layup. Meike Boerstra would add a point for the Vikes via free throw, making it 43-28 with two and a half minutes to play.
- A buzzer-beating three from Day/Ashlee pulled the Vikes within 10, 46-36, at the end of the third.
4th Quarter – UFV 71, UVic 57
- Opening the fourth-quarter scoring, Ashlee drained a three in the Vikes' opening possession to make it 46-39.
- A Day jumper followed, bringing the Vikes within five, 46-41, and forcing a UFV timeout with 8:39 to go.
- Keeping within striking distance, a UFV basket would immediately be met with a Day jumper, bringing the score to 48-43 with seven minutes to go.
- The Cascades broke away over the final five minutes of play to come away with the 71-57 win.
WORTH NOTING
- The Vikes sit at 9-7 on the season after the two losses to UFV.
- Ashlee led the Vikes with 19 points, including going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. She added six rebounds and four assists for the Vikes.
- Day tallied 18 points and three assists, while McMillan rounded out the top-three scorers with eight points, adding four assists.
