Kelowna, B.C. – The University of Victoria women's basketball team opened the final weekend of Canada West regular season play with a 63-55 win over UBC Okanagan, Feb. 24, at the UBCO Gymnasium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Quarter – UBCO 17, UVic 16
- A close game from the start, the Vikes would take a 6-4 lead on three's from Aleah Ashlee and Ashlyn Day with eight minutes to go in the opening quarter.
- UBCO took its first lead, 10-8, with just under four minutes remaining.
- One minute later, Nicole Torozan gave the Vikes its lead back with a three-pointer, 11-8.
- Trading baskets and keeping it a one-point game for the final minutes, UBCO held a 17-16 lead after 10 minutes of play.
2nd Quarter – UVic 36, UBCO 28
- A layup from Calli McMillan followed by a pair of free throws from Mimi Sigue gave the Vikes a three-point lead, 20-17, with 8:46 to play.
- The Heat would cut the Vikes' lead and tie the game at 24 with five and a half minutes remaining.
- A 7-0 run for the Vikes resulted in a 31-24 lead with two minutes to go.
- A McMillan jumper put the final points of the quarter on the board for UVic, establishing a 36-28 lead at the half.
3rd Quarter – UVic 50, UBCO 43
- A Sigue bucket would put the first points on the board in the second half, however, the Heat would score the next 10 points to tie the game, 38-38, with 5:30 to play.
- An and-one from Day restored Victoria's lead, 41-40, which then grew to 45-40 with two-straight Torozan layups with three and a half minutes to go.
- The Vikes ended the third on a 7-0 run, holding a 50-43 advantage heading in to the fourth quarter.
4th Quarter – UVic 63, UBCO 55
- The Vikes grew their lead to 10 points over the first minute and a half of the fourth, with a three from McMillan putting UVic ahead, 55-45.
- Cutting in to Victoria's lead, the Heat would use a 10-3 run to pull within three, 58-55, with under four minutes to play.
- With less than a minute to go, buckets from McMillan and Day would give the Vikes some breathing room, 62-55.
- A free throw from Sigue would add to UVic's point total, with the Vikes claiming a 63-55 win over the Heat to open the weekend.
WORTH NOTING
- The Vikes move to 10-7 on the season with the win, and take the series win over the Heat with a 2-1 record.
- With the win, UVic snapped its three-game losing skid.
- McMillan led the way for the Vikes, scoring 19 points, grabbing four boards, and tallying two assists for the Vikes.
- Day added 10 points and four rebounds in the win, while Sigue recorded a team-high 13 rebounds and added seven points for UVic.
