VICTORIA – Claiming its first win of the spring season, the University of Victoria men's rugby team defeated Westshore RFC, 60-5, at Wallace Field, March 12.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half – UVic 17, Westshore 5
- Two tries from Ethan Hager opened the scoring, giving the Vikes a 10-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of play.
- Scoring its only try of the match, Westshore cut the Vikes' lead in half, 10-5, with 25 minutes to play in the first half.
- In the final minute, Hager scored seven points on his third try of the day and first convert to put the Vikes ahead, 17-5, at the half.
Second Half – UVic 60, Westshore 5
- Payton Gibson put the Vikes on the board to start the second half, scoring a try in the 43rd minute for the 22-5 Vikes lead.
- Back-to-back tries from Denver Fatt added 10 points to the Vikes' lead. With a successful convert from Ethan Smith on the first, UVic went ahead, 34-5, with 24 minutes left in the match.
- A try from Owen Kokan and convert from Lucas Okano pushed the Vikes in front, 41-5, in the 60th minute.
- Putting up his first try of the day, Nicholas Carson added five points in the 67th minute for a 46-5 Vikes lead.
- The sixth try-scorer of the day for Victoria, Christopher Gamage added five points by touching the ball down. Okano made his second convert of the afternoon for the 53-5 Vikes advantage.
- Adding seven points in the final minute of play, Okano scored both the try and convert to finalize the Vikes' win at 60-5.
WORTH NOTING
- A 55-point win for the Vikes, UVic scored 50 unanswered points during the win.
- The win marked the first of the spring season for the Vikes, who are now 1-3 in 2022.
- The 60 points scored by the Vikes mark its highest scoring match this spring, and highest scoring affair since its 72-0 shutout of Dalhousie at the Canadian University Men's Rugby Championship, Nov. 24, 2021.
- UVic registered seven different try-scorers on 10 total tries during the win.
