Vancouver, B.C. – Defeating the University of British Columbia for the first time since 2019, the University of Victoria downed the Thunderbirds, 30-14, Sept. 17 at the Gerald McGavin Rugby Centre.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half – UVic 17, UBC 7
- The Vikes were the first to put points on the board, coming via penalty goal by Logan Martin-Feek in the seventh minute.
- Putting the next 14 points on the board, back-to-back tries by Denver Fatt and consecutive converts from Martin-Feek gave the Vikes a 17-0 lead in the 26th minute.
- UBC found its first points of the game just before the 40-minute mark, making the score 17-7 for the Vikes at the half.
Second Half – UVic 30, UBC 14
- A Vikes penalty goal opened the second-half scoring, with Martin-Feek giving the Vikes the 20-7 lead near the 45th minute.
- Scoring his first try of the season, Gabriel Casey touched the ball down in the 70th minute for the 25-7 UVic lead.
- Angus Boyd-Porter notched his first try of the year in the 73rd minute to extend the Vikes' lead to 30-7.
- The Thunderbirds would score the final try and convert of the match in the final minute of play, bringing the final score to 30-14 in favour of the Vikes.
WORTH NOTING
- The win marked the Vikes' first over UBC since Nov. 25, 2019, when Victoria bested the Thunderbirds in the Canadian University Men's Rugby Championship final, 21-20 in Montreal, Que.
- The Vikes have not beaten UBC in Vancouver since March 29, 2013, which resulted in a 39-15 win for UVic.
- The tries for Fatt, Casey and Boyd-Porter marked their firsts of the season. UVic has now recorded seven different try-scorers through two matches.
- The Vikes move to 2-0 on the season with the win, while UBC drops to 0-2.
- Victoria has captured the first leg of the Wightman Boot trophy chase with the win. The second leg of the series will take place Oct. 1, 2022 at Wallace Field.
