VICTORIA – A high-scoring first quarter edged the University of Victoria women's basketball team past the University of Northern British Columbia, 67-60, Jan. 13 inside CARSA Performance Gym.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ashlyn Day scored the first eight points for the Vikes, putting the home side ahead 8-2 with 6:45 to play in the opening quarter.
- A three-pointer from Tegan MacKinnon put the Vikes ahead by double-digits, 13-2, at the halfway point of the first quarter.
- Victoria held a 25-6 lead at the end of the first quarter, with Day and MacKinnon each recording two three's in the first 10 minutes of play.
- A tighter second frame saw UNBC outscore the Vikes, 14-13, to bring the score to 38-20 in favour of UVic at the half.
- The Timberwolves opened the second half on a 10-0 run, bringing the score to 38-27 with the Vikes still ahead with 7:32 remaining in the third quarter.
- A 6-0 UVic run via jumpers from Day, Abigail Becker, and Kate Johnson pushed the Vikes' lead back to 46-28 with 3:57 to go in the third.
- After the Timberwolves made it a 10-point game in the final minute, 52-42, a bucket from Johnson gave the Vikes a 12-point cushion, 54-42, at the end of the third.
- An offensive spurt by the Timberwolves pulled the visiting side within five, 60-55, with two and a half minutes remaining in the fourth.
- Closing out the game with a pair of free throws from Johnson, the Vikes came away with the 67-60 win.
WORTH NOTING
- The six points allowed by the Vikes in the first quarter mark the fewest allowed in a quarter to an opponent this season.
- Johnson led the Vikes with 17 points, adding six rebounds, a team-high five assists and team-leading four steals in the win.
- Becker recorded her third double-double of the season with a 16-point, 11-rebound performance.
- Day and MacKinnon added double-figure scoring nights with 14 and 10 points, respectively.
- The Vikes move to 5-8 with the win, while the Timberwolves drop to 3-8 with the setback.
