VICTORIA – The University of Victoria women's basketball team could not overcome a second-half push by the University of Northern British Columbia, falling to the Timberwolves, 91-79, Jan. 14 at CARSA Performance Gym.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Timberwolves held a one-basket lead through the first half of the opening quarter until a Meike Boerstra layup with 4:38 to play tied the game, 11-11.
- Back-to-back three's from Tegan MacKinnon put the Vikes ahead, 17-14, with 2:46 to play in the first.
- Trading baskets to the buzzer, the Vikes and Timberwolves were tied, 27-27, after 10 minutes of play.
- A quick 6-0 run made up of four points from Mimi Sigue and a basket from Kate Johnson put Victoria ahead, 36-29, with 7:29 until the half.
- A 10-0 UVic run via Ashlyn Day three, Sierra Reisig layup, pair of free throws from Abigail Becker and a second Day three-pointer gave the Vikes a 48-39 lead with three minutes left in the second quarter.
- At the half, the Vikes held a 50-48 lead over UNBC.
- The Timberwolves outscored the Vikes 17-7 in the third quarter, resulting in the visiting side taking a 65-57 lead after 30 minutes of play.
- With the Vikes unable to close the gap, UNBC pulled away with the win, 91-79.
WORTH NOTING
- Day led the Vikes with a season-high 35 points, going a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line.
- Johnson recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and also added a team-high five assists for the Vikes.
- The game marked the Vikes' annual Shoot for the Cure fundraiser. The final amount raised will be released in the coming days on govikesgo.com.
- The Vikes move to 5-9 with the setback, while the Timberwolves improve to 4-8 with the win.
