Regina, Sask. – The University of Victoria women's basketball team fell to the University of Regina, 89-63, at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport, Jan. 6.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Trading baskets until it was a 9-9 score line, Regina claimed the first run of the game to take an 18-9 lead with six minutes to play in the opening frame.
- The Vikes ended the first on a 5-0 run with a bucket and free throw from Kate Johnson and jumper from Mimi Sigue, bringing the score to 27-19 in favour of the Cougars after the first 10 minutes of play.
- A five-point run from Ashlyn Day via jumper and three-pointer brought the Vikes within 11, 39-28, with 5:39 remaining until halftime.
- The Cougars held a 50-35 lead at the half.
- A jumper from Day marked the first points of second half by either side, bringing the score to 50-37 with 9:10 to go.
- A Tegan MacKinnon three in the final seconds made the score 67-49 with Regina in front at the end of the third quarter.
- The Cougars maintained their lead to the finish, coming away with the 89-63 win.
WORTH NOTING
- Day led the Vikes with 30 points, adding team-highs in rebounds (9) and steals (3).
- The 30 points marked Day's third game of the season scoring 30-or-more.
- Sigue and Johnson added double-figure scoring performances for UVic with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
- The Vikes move to 4-7 on the year while the Cougars improve to 8-1.
