Regina, Sask. – Despite a final push effort, the University of Victoria women's basketball team was unable to overcome an early deficit created by the University of Regina, falling to the Cougars, 78-72, Jan. 7 inside the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Putting up the first nine points for the Vikes, Abigail Becker pushed the Vikes out to a 7-0 lead with 7:49 to play and a 9-4 lead with 6:28 remaining in the first quarter.
- Regina used a 6-0 run to tie the game, 15-15 with 1:07 to go before taking the 18-15 lead with 43 seconds to play.
- A free throw from Becker made the score 18-16 in favour of the Cougars at the end of the first.
- Regina controlled the second quarter, taking a 10-point lead, 34-24 with 5:46 to go before extending their lead to 49-32 at the half.
- Kate Johnson put the Vikes on the board first in the second half, using a jumper and a layup to bring the score to 49-36 with 8:45 remaining.
- A buzzer-beating layup from Becker brought the home side's lead back to single-digits, 65-56, after three quarters of play.
- Bringing the score within five, 65-60, a layup from Becker and jumper from Johnson closed the gap for the Vikes with 8:52 remaining.
- Mimi Sigue brought the Vikes within three with a pair of free throws, 73-70, with one minute to play, but Regina would hold its lead to the end to take the 78-72 win.
WORTH NOTING
- Becker recorded a career-high in points with 29, adding nine rebounds and two blocks to her performance.
- Sierra Reisig recorded a team-high five assists, adding four points, six rebounds and one steal on the night.
- Johnson and Sigue each tallied 15 points, with Sigue adding eight rebounds for the Vikes.
- The Vikes move to 4-8 on the season while the Cougars improve to 9-1 after the win.
