Abbotsford, B.C. – A fourth quarter surge by the University of the Fraser Valley women's basketball team pushed the home side past the University of Victoria, 72-49, Nov. 11 at the UFV Athletic Centre to close the weekend series.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Vikes opened the game by taking a five-point lead on a layup from Abigail Becker and three from Tegan MacKinnon, making it 5-0 for UVic with nine minutes to go.
- Fraser Valley would score two-straight baskets to bring the Vikes' lead to one, but a bucket from Becker in response and immediate stop by the Vikes' defence forcing a UFV shot clock violation led the Cascades to call timeout with the Vikes ahead 7-4 with six minutes to go.
- Working out to an eight-point lead, a pair of free throws from Becker put the Vikes ahead, 14-6 with 2:45 to go in the first quarter.
- UFV would add five points over the final 2:45 to narrow the Vikes' lead to 14-11 at the end of the first quarter.
- Taking advantage of the Vikes' scoring drought to start the second quarter, the Cascades took the lead, 21-14, over the first five and a half minutes of the frame.
- A layup from Becker, pair of free throws from Sierra Reisig, and jumper from Makena Anderson comprised the second-quarter Vikes scoring, bringing the halftime score to 26-20 in favour of UFV.
- UFV put the first points of the third quarter on the board to extend their lead to nine, but a Vikes run ending with back-to-back three's by Karis de Paiva brought the Vikes within three, 33-30, with 7:20 to play in the third.
- Keeping within five for the remainder of the quarter, a free throw from Becker finalized the third quarter score at 46-41 for the Cascades.
- After being held scoreless for the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, the Vikes couldn't catch up to the Cascades, ultimately falling, 72-49.
WORTH NOTING
- The 11 points allowed by the Vikes to the Cascades in the first quarter are the fewest allowed by the Vikes in the first quarter this season and second-fewest allowed in any quarter of play.
- Becker led the Vikes with 17 points, adding seven rebounds and two blocks in 28 minutes on the floor.
- The Vikes sit at 0-4 through the first four games of the year, while UFV improves to 4-0 through two series.
