VICTORIA – The University of Victoria women's basketball team fell to the University of British Columbia in the first-of-two games, 70-51, Nov. 23 at CARSA Performance Gym.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Vikes put the first points of the game on the board, taking a 4-0 lead on a Mimi Sigue steal and breakaway layup followed by an Abigail Becker layup in the first minute of action.
- Becker kept UVic in the game twice more in the first quarter, using a layup to tie the game, 6-6, with 5:46 on the clock, and bringing the Vikes back within one with an and-one, 10-9, with 3:30 to play in the opening frame.
- A 10-0 UBC run over the final 3:40 of the first gave the Thunderbirds a 20-9 lead after 10 minutes of action.
- Using a 6-0 run to narrow UBC's lead, the Vikes saw a layup from Sigue, followed by a steal and fast break layup from Karis de Paiva, and two free throws from de Paiva on the next possession to bring the visiting side's lead to 32-19 with four minutes until halftime.
- At the half, UBC held a 41-23 lead over Victoria.
- Becker scored two layups to the Thunderbirds' two free throws in the first minute of the third quarter, bringing the lead down to 43-27.
- de Paiva recorded the Vikes' first three of the game, bringing the score to 53-34 with 2:31 to play in the third quarter.
- A three from Tegan MacKinnon in the final 30 seconds brought the third quarter score to 58-40 in favour of UBC.
- Though the Thunderbirds kept their lead through the final 10 minutes of play, a Brooklyn White jumper in the final seconds brought the final score to 70-51 for UBC.
WORTH NOTING
- Thanks to a donation from Heart Pharmacy, the Vikes raised $2500 in their annual Shoot for the Cure game.
- Becker led the Vikes with 14 points, adding five rebounds, three blocks, and two steals in 28 minutes on the floor.
- Sigue added a double-digit scoring performance with 12 points, adding a team-high four steals and two rebounds for the Vikes.
- de Paiva recorded a Vikes-high seven rebounds, adding seven points and tying for a team-high three blocks.
- Victoria moves to 0-5 on the season with the loss, while UBC improves to 5-2 with the win.
