VICTORIA - The University of Victoria women's basketball team fell to the University of Calgary, 78-42, in its season-opening game, Nov. 3 at CARSA Performance Gym.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Abigail Becker opened the 2023-24 season scoring for the Vikes, giving Victoria its only lead of the night, 2-0, in the opening minute of play.
- Another bucket from Becker followed by Tegan Michel's first three in a Vikes uniform brought the score to 21-7 in favour of Calgary with two and a half minutes to play in the opening frame.
- Free throws by Brooklyn White and Becker brought the first quarter score to 27-9 after 10 minutes of play.
- Five-straight points on a three from Sierra Reisig and layup by Makena Anderson brought the score to 27-14 with eight minutes until halftime.
- The Dinos continued to stretch their lead, holding a 43-23 lead over UVic at the half.
- While able to keep Calgary scoreless for three and a half minutes, the Vikes were only able to add a free throw by Joaleah Tupas-Singh to bring the score to 55-34 with the Dinos still in the lead. The Dinos held a 60-36 lead after three quarters.
- Back-to-back points from Becker via layup and jumper made the score 67-40 with just over six and a half minutes to play in the game.
-  Unable to produce any scoring runs to eat into the Dinos' lead, the Vikes ultimately fell, 78-42.
WORTH NOTING
- Becker led the Vikes with 11 points, going 5-9 from the field while adding an assist and a block to her stat line.
- Reisig posted double-digits in her first game of the year, recording 10 points along with three rebounds, four assists, and two steals in 26 minutes on the floor.
- Making her Vikes debut, Anderson posted seven points, seven rebounds, one assist, and a team-high six steals.
- In addition to Anderson, three players made their Vikes debut: Michel, Tupas-Singh, and Karis de Paiva.
- The Vikes begin the season 0-1, while Calgary goes 1-0 to start the year.
