VICTORIA – The University of Victoria women's basketball team fell to the University of Calgary, 83-60, Nov. 4 at CARSA Performance Gym.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A three from Karis de Paiva, two free throws by Makena Anderson and a de Paiva layup put the Vikes ahead, 7-0, with 8:20 to play in the opening quarter.
- The Dinos pushed ahead over the next five minutes of play before a Brooklyn White put-back and de Paiva layup brought Victoria back within five, 20-15, with three minutes to go.
- A swipe and fast break by Tegan MacKinnon in the final five seconds made the score 24-19 in favour of the Dinos at the end of the first quarter.
- The Vikes were held scoreless by the Dinos defence for nearly four minutes to open the second quarter before a pair of free throws by Sierra Reisig ended the drought, 28-21, with just under six minutes to play in the second quarter.
- The Dinos held a 42-30 lead at halftime after outscoring UVic 14-7 in the final five minutes of the frame.
- Calgary opened the third quarter on a 15-0 run until Tegan Michel made a bucket for the Vikes, bringing the score to 57-32 with 6:25 to play.
- A 7-0 run from a Michel jumper, MacKinnon three and Abigail Becker layup brought Calgary's lead to 65-41 with 2:15 to play in the third. The Dinos held a 69-43 lead after 30 minutes of play.
- A three by Michel marked the first points of the fourth quarter, bringing the score to 69-46 with nine minutes to play.
- Calgary maintained its lead for the remainder of the fourth, claiming an 83-60 win.
WORTH NOTING
- de Paiva led the Vikes with 15 points on the night, adding eight rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block for the home side.
- Becker and MacKinnon each added 12-point scoring nights for UVic, also tying for a team-high with two steals each.
- Brooklyn White led the Vikes in rebounds with nine, adding two points and block for Victoria.
- Michel took three charges for the Vikes on defence.
- The Vikes sit at 0-2 after the opening series, while Calgary is 2-0 to start the year.
