VICTORIA – Final-second free throws by the University of British Columbia gave the Thunderbirds a 64-62 win over the University of Victoria women's basketball team, Feb. 11, at CARSA Performance Gym.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A 5-0 Kate Johnson run via three-pointer and layup gave the Vikes their first lead of the night, 15-11, with 4:26 to play in the opening frame.
- Eight Thunderbird points over the final two and a half minutes put UBC ahead, 20-17, after 10 minutes of play.
- A 9-0 UBC run put some separation between the two sides, giving the Thunderbirds a 33-22 lead with 4:20 to play in the first half.
- A pair of free throws from Johnson in the final seconds kept UBC's lead to single-digits at the half, 40-33.
- A 7-0 Vikes run from a Johnson layup, Ashlyn Day layup, and Day three put the Vikes back in front, 44-42, with 6:01 to play in the third quarter.
- Holding UBC to nine points in the third quarter, the Vikes took a 53-49 lead after 30 minutes of play.
- A back-and-forth fight to the finish in the fourth quarter, UBC sunk a pair of free throws with two seconds remaining to claim the 64-62 win.
WORTH NOTING
- Abigail Becker led the Vikes with 20 points, a season-high 12 rebounds, two blocks, and one steal.
- Johnson tallied 18 points, four rebounds, a team-high four assists, and three steals for the Vikes.
- Day finished her last game inside CARSA Performance Gym with 15 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and a team-high six steals.
- At the end of the Canada West regular season, the Vikes hold a record of 9-11, while the Thunderbirds sit at 11-9.
