Kelowna, B.C. – A dominant first half propelled the University of Victoria women's basketball team past the University of British Columbia Okanagan, 66-59, Feb. 4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Trading baskets over the first five minutes of the opening quarter, a pair of Kate Johnson free throws put the Vikes ahead, 13-11, at the halfway point.
- A 13-3 run began to separate the Vikes from the Heat, giving UVic a 20-13 lead with 2:47 remaining in the first.
- A final layup from Johnson put the Vikes ahead by a score of 26-18 after the first 10 minutes of play.
- Jumpers from Abigail Becker, Ashlyn Day, and two from Johnson pushed the Vikes ahead, 34-20, with 5:56 to play in the second quarter.
- Holding the Heat to just seven points in the second quarter, the Vikes held a 45-25 lead at the half.
- Nine-straight points by the Heat pulled the home side within four of the Vikes, 54-50, at the end of the third quarter.
- A 7-0 Vikes run consisting of a Becker layup, Johnson jumper, and Mimi Sigue and-one put the Vikes in front, 61-53, with six minutes remaining in the game.
- Holding the lead over the Heat to the end, the Vikes came away with the 66-59 win.
WORTH NOTING
- Becker finished with a double-double, recording 21 points and 10 rebounds, adding a career-high five blocks in the win.
- Johnson also recorded 21 points, adding nine rebounds, a team-high five assists, and one steal for the Vikes.
- Brooklyn White added 10 rebounds for Victoria, tying the team-high.
- The Vikes sit at 8-10 after the split weekend, while the Heat move to 10-10.
