Vancouver, B.C. – The University of Victoria women's basketball team ran away with a 76-47 win over the University of British Columbia, Feb. 9 at War Memorial Gym.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Thunderbirds put the first points on the board, taking a 6-3 lead before a 9-0 Vikes run from an Ashlyn Day three, Kate Johnson layup and free throw, and Day and-one put the Vikes in front, 12-6, with 4:54 to play in the first quarter.
- Despite a Thunderbirds basket in the final seconds, the Vikes held an 18-13 lead after one quarter of play.
- The home side managed to pull within two, but a Day free throw, Abigail Becker layup, Sierra Reisig jumper and Becker free throw pushed UVic's lead out to 33-25 with 1:25 to play until the half.
- One more point by UBC made it a 33-26 game in favour of the Vikes at the half.
- Back-to-back Day three's gave Victoria its first double-digit lead of the night, 45-33, with 6:12 to play in the third quarter.
- A Tegan MacKinnon buzzer-beating three-pointer gave Victoria a 60-37 lead at the end of the third.
- Outscoring UBC 16-10 in the final frame, the Vikes came away with the 76-47 win.
WORTH NOTING
- Day led the Vikes with 21 points, adding nine rebounds, three assists, and three steals in the win.
- Johnson recorded 18 points, five rebounds, four assists, three steals, and one block for the Vikes in the win against her former team.
- Brooklyn White tallied a career-high 17 rebounds in the win.
- The Vikes move to 9-10 on the season while the Thunderbirds fall to 10-9 after the series opener.
