Winnipeg, Man. – The University of Victoria women's basketball team fell to the University of Manitoba, 76-61, Jan. 19 at the Investors Group Athletic Centre.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Though Manitoba went ahead to start the game, back-to-back layups from Tana Pankratz brought the Vikes back within one, 7-6, with 6:21 to play in the first quarter.
- A layup by Abigail Becker at the buzzer made the score 21-15 in favour of Manitoba after the first 10 minutes of play.
- The Bisons widened their lead over the first five minutes of the second quarter, going ahead 33-19.
- A 10-0 Vikes run, beginning with a Makena Anderson three and ending with an Anderson layup, brought the Vikes within four, 33-29, with 1:47 to play until halftime.
- The Bisons made the final basket of the first half to take a 35-29 lead into the break.
- Keeping Manitoba's lead to six or less for the entire third quarter, the Vikes came within two on a five-point Pankratz run, 47-45, with 4:43 to go. The Bisons held a 58-46 lead at the end of the third.
- Two layups from Becker and a Pankratz three opened the fourth-quarter scoring, cutting the Bisons' lead to five, 58-53, and forcing a Manitoba timeout with 7:41 to go.
- Out of the timeout, the Bisons outscored UVic 9-1 to go up 67-54 with 4:55 to play in the game.
- Unable to cut in to the deficit, the Vikes fell to the Bisons, 76-61.
WORTH NOTING
- Becker recorded her second double-double of the season, finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
- Pankratz led the Vikes with 23 points, adding six rebounds, one assist, and one steal in 31 minutes on the floor.
- Sierra Reisig posted a career-high six assists for Victoria, also adding a team-high four steals in 35 minutes of play.
- The meeting between the Vikes and Bisons marked the first since the 2019-20 season, and the Vikes' first time in Winnipeg since the 2017-18 season.
- The Vikes move to 3-8 with the loss, while the Bisons improve to 4-11 with the win.
