Thunderbirds take game one against Vikes

Vancouver, B.C. – The University of Victoria women's basketball team fell to the University of British Columbia, 93-54, Nov. 15 at War Memorial Gym.
 
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
UBC takes double-digit lead in first quarter
  • Makena Anderson opened the game scoring with a layup one minute in for a quick 2-0 Vikes lead.
  • UBC began to separate early, holding a 15-6 lead at the halfway point of the first quarter.
  • Four points on free throws from Karis de Paiva and Tana Pankratz brought the Thunderbirds' lead down to nine, 23-14, in the final minute of the quarter, but UBC hit a three in the final seconds to hold a 26-14 lead at the end of the first.
Allison leads Vikes' second quarter scoring
  • Natalie Allison was responsible for half of the Vikes' points in the second quarter with five.
  • The Vikes were plagued by a scoring drought over the first six minutes until a pair of free throws from Jade Dittmer added points to the Vikes' scoreline, 41-16.
  • Along with Allison and Dittmer's points, a Mimi Sigue layup and Joaleah Tupas-Singh free throw made the score 53-24 in favour of UBC at halftime.
Vikes close out game with strong fourth quarter
  • After the Thunderbirds added 10 points to their lead in the third quarter, the Vikes started the fourth down 76-37.
  • Victoria posted its highest-scoring quarter of the game in the fourth, notching 17 points. The Vikes also held the Thunderbirds to just 17 points in the fourth quarter, UBC's lowest-scoring quarter of the game.
  • Layups in the final minute of action from Tupas-Singh and de Paiva brought the final score to 93-54 in favour of UBC.
WORTH NOTING
  • Mimi Sigue led the Vikes in points and rebounds with 15 and seven, respectively.
  • Meike Boerstra had a team-high five assists, which also marks a career-high.
  • Tana Pankratz made her season debut, recording four points, four rebounds and one steal in 23 minutes on the floor.
  • The Vikes move to 3-2 on the year after the loss, while UBC improves to 5-0.
