Vikes defeat Griffins for second-straight series sweep

Edmonton, Alta. – The University of Victoria women's basketball team completed its second-straight series sweep with a 69-56 win over MacEwan University, Feb. 10 at the Dr. David W. Atkinson Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Giving the Vikes their first lead of the game was Tegan MacKinnon, who sunk her first three-pointer of the day for the 6-5 Vikes lead with 5:19 to go in the first quarter.
  • Consecutive scoring on a Mimi Sigue layup and Makena Anderson three gave the Vikes a four-point advantage, 11-7, with just under four minutes to play in the first.
  • Tana Pankratz's free throw marked the final point for the Vikes in the first quarter, putting UVic ahead 14-11 after the first 10 minutes of play.
  • After MacEwan tied the game with a three to open the second quarter, 14-14, the Vikes and Griffins traded baskets until five-straight UVic points from an Anderson layup, Pankratz jumper and Abigail Becker free throw put the Vikes in front by four, 26-22 with just over four minutes remaining until halftime.
  • Pankratz and MacEwan traded three's in the final 20 seconds of action to put the Griffins in front, 36-33, at halftime.
  • Though most of the third quarter consisted of back-and-forth scoring between the two teams, the Vikes scored nine-straight points via MacKinnon three, Anderson layup, and two-straight Brooklyn Walbaum layups over the last three and a half minutes of the frame for the 50-47 lead at the end of the third.
  • Adding five points to their lead to open the fourth, a Karis de Paiva layup and MacKinnon's fourth three-pointer of the game gave Victoria an eight-point cushion, 55-47, with 7:25 still on the clock.
  • Keeping the Griffins under control for the remainder of the period, two Sigue free throws and a MacKinnon three in the final minute of play finalized the Vikes' win at 69-56.
WORTH NOTING
  • MacKinnon led the Vikes with 15 points, tying her season-high, and added three rebounds and one assist in 21 minutes of play.
  • MacKinnon's five made three's mark the second-most in a single Canada West women's basketball game this season, and also marks the second time MacKinnon has made five three-pointers in a game this season, also accomplishing the feat one weekend ago, Feb. 3 against Brandon.
  • Sigue recorded her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds in the win.
  • Pankratz added 12 points and four rebounds for the Vikes, along with team-highs in assists (4), steals (4), and blocks (2).
  • The Vikes improve to 8-10 on the year with the win, while the Griffins fall to 1-19.
