VICTORIA – The University of Victoria women's basketball team cruised to a 77-30 win over Thompson Rivers University, Feb. 14 at CARSA Performance Gym.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Four points by Abigail Becker opened the scoring for the Vikes, putting the home side ahead 4-2 with 8:30 to play in the first quarter.
- Embarking on an 11-0 run with a Karis de Paiva three, a Tana Pankratz three two minutes later brought the score to 19-5 in favour of the Vikes with 3:44 still to play in the first quarter.
- A three by Brooklyn Walbaum was met with four-straight WolfPack points over the last 1:12 of the first quarter, leaving the Vikes with a 23-12 advantage after the first 10 minutes of play.
- Nine-straight points from the Vikes in the second quarter, ending with a Karis de Paiva layup, gave Victoria a 20-point lead, 38-18, with 4:09 remaining until halftime.
- Though the Vikes were scoreless over the last four minutes, they allowed just two points to Thompson Rivers to take a 38-20 lead into the halftime break.
- While holding the WolfPack scoreless for the first seven minutes of the third quarter, the Vikes extended their lead to 54-20 on a Walbaum three with just under three minutes to play in the frame.
- Finishing the third with a 23-6 score advantage, the Vikes took a 61-26 lead into the fourth quarter.
- Keeping Thompson Rivers to single-digit scoring for the third-straight quarter, the Vikes outscored TRU 16-4 in the final 10 minutes to come away with the 77-30 win.
WORTH NOTING
- Becker recorded her fifth double-double of the year with a 17-point, 13-rebound night, also finishing with a team-high three blocks in the win.
- de Paiva notched 13 points and a team-high three blocks along with four rebounds and two steals in 22 minutes on the floor in the win.
- Brooklyn White tallied 12 rebounds for the Vikes in the win, while Pankratz led the Vikes in assists with seven and Sierra Reisig led the team and set a new career-high with six steals.
- The Vikes improve to 9-10 and claim their fifth-straight win while Thompson Rivers falls to 2-17 following the conclusion of the game.
