VICTORIA – Completing the 2023-24 Canada West regular season, the University of Victoria women's basketball team defeated Thompson Rivers University, 70-41, Feb. 15 at CARSA Performance Gym.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Trading baskets through the first six points of the game, a three-pointer from Tana Pankratz put the Vikes ahead by three, 9-6, with 7:32 to play in the first quarter.
- Going on a 13-0 run over the final 5:25 of the opening frame, led by two three's from Tegan MacKinnon, the Vikes went ahead by a score of 25-7 after 10 minutes of play.
- A three from Brooklyn Walbaum with 8:54 remaining in the second gave the Vikes a 20-point lead, 28-8.
- Back-to-back three's from Pankratz and Walbaum put the Vikes ahead, 36-15 with 1:27 to go, before the WolfPack made the final two baskets for the 36-19 Vikes lead at the half.
- Maintaining a double-digit lead throughout the third quarter, a pair of jumpers from Meike Boerstra put the Vikes ahead by a score of 53-28 with 1:13 remaining in the quarter before a final bucket from Thompson Rivers finalized the third quarter score at 53-30 in favour of the Vikes.
- Keeping the WolfPack in check over the final 10 minutes of play, Makena Anderson's three with 30 seconds remaining brought the final score to 70-41 and sealed the win for the Vikes.
WORTH NOTING
- Pankratz posted a team-high 19 points along with a Vikes-leading 12 rebounds for her third double-double of the year. She also posted a team-high six assists in the win.
- Becker added a double-double performance of her own, her sixth of the year, with a 13-point, 11-rebound effort along with a team-high two blocks in the win.
- The Vikes held the WolfPack to 23.7% shooting in the win while shooting 45.9% themselves.
- Victoria finished the Canada West season at 10-10 overall, while Thompson Rivers' year comes to an end with a 2-18 mark.
