Abbotsford, B.C. – The 10th-seeded University of Victoria women's basketball team fell to sixth-seeded University of Alberta, 68-49, in the semifinal round of the Canada West playoffs, Feb. 24 at the UFV Athletic Centre.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Alberta scored the first four points of the game, but a layup from Tana Pankratz followed by a three-pointer in the next Vikes possession put UVic in front, 5-4, with 6:18 to go in the first quarter of play.
- A three-point play from Abigail Becker, fast break layup by Makena Anderson and turnaround jumper from Pankratz widened the Vikes' lead to 12-4 with just over three minutes still on the clock.
- Though a three-pointer by Sierra Reisig led to Alberta calling a timeout with a 15-7 Vikes lead and 2:33 still on the clock, the Pandas scored the final seven points of the quarter to narrow the Vikes' lead to one, 15-14, at the end of the first.
- Alberta took the lead over the first four minutes of the second quarter, 21-15, until Mimi Sigue put the first Vikes points of the frame on the board at the 6:03 mark, 21-17.
- After the Pandas hit a three at the buzzer, the Vikes went into halftime trailing 33-19.
- A narrow 18-14 scoring advantage for Alberta in the third quarter extended the Pandas' lead to 51-32 entering the fourth quarter.
- Mostly going basket-for-basket through the fourth quarter, four-straight points from back-to-back jumpers by Brooklyn White and Anderson marked the largest consecutive scoring for the Vikes in the fourth, resulting in a 62-41 Pandas lead with just over four minutes to play.
- Unable to overcome the deficit in the final minutes, the Vikes ultimately fell, 68-49.
WORTH NOTING
- Pankratz led the Vikes with 12 points, adding seven rebounds, one assist, one steal, and a block in 25 minutes on the floor.
- Becker finished with six points and 11 rebounds, tallying all 11 boards in the first two quarters of play.
- Reisig led the Vikes in assists and steals with three in each category, adding five points and three rebounds on the day.
- The Vikes move to 12-11 on the year and 2-1 in playoff action with the loss.
