VICTORIA – The University of Victoria women's basketball program swept Brandon University, coming away with an 87-40 victory in the second game of the series, Feb. 3 at CARSA Performance Gym.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Vikes' graduating athletes put up the first 10 points for UVic, coming via put-back by Brooklyn White, a layup by Sierra Reisig, and back-to-back three's from Tegan MacKinnon and Reisig for the 10-2 Vikes lead with eight minutes remaining in the first quarter.
- Completing a 16-0 run with a Mimi Sigue layup with 4:19 on the clock, the Vikes went ahead 20-2.
- Abigail Becker brought the score to 27-8 in favour of the Vikes at the end of the first quarter with a jumper in the final 30 seconds of play.
- After extending the lead to 22 points on a Tana Pankratz three, 33-11, to open the third quarter, a quick 6-0 run from Brandon brought the score to 33-17 and resulted in a UVic timeout with six minutes remaining until halftime.
- Growing their lead in the final half of the second quarter, five-straight points from Makena Anderson's three and layup ended the frame and gave Victoria a 54-25 lead at the half.
- Three-straight Becker buckets opened the third quarter scoring, giving the Vikes a 60-25 advantage with 8:46 to go in the third.
- Though the Vikes were hit with a scoring drought for the final five minutes of the third quarter, their defence allowed just five points to Brandon in that time, leading to a 65-33 Vikes lead heading in to the fourth quarter.
- Outscoring the Bobcats 22-7 in the final frame, the Vikes came away with the 87-40 victory.
WORTH NOTING
- The Vikes celebrated their four graduating athletes following the game, recognizing Tegan MacKinnon, Sierra Reisig, Marja Wahl, and Brooklyn White for their Vikes careers.
- Becker led the team with 21 points in the win, completing the double-double effort with 10 rebounds.
- White led the Vikes with a season-high 13 rebounds, adding four points, two assists, and one steal.
- Reisig and MacKinnon added 15 and 13 points, respectively, while Reisig led the team with five assists and three steals.
- The Vikes move to 6-10 following the two-win weekend, while Brandon falls to 1-19.
