Edmonton, Alta. – The University of Victoria women's basketball team took down MacEwan University, 75-33, Feb. 9 in the Dr. David W. Atkinson Gymnasium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Layups from Abigail Becker and Sierra Reisig put the Vikes in front, 4-0, with 8:19 remaining in the first quarter.
- After the Griffins scored four-straight points to tie the game, a three from Tana Pankratz, layup by Brooklyn White and layup from Brooklyn Walbaum completed a 7-0 Vikes run for the 11-4 lead with 4:11 remaining in the opening quarter.
- The Vikes held a 19-6 lead after the first quarter of play.
- Extending their lead over the second quarter, a 13-0 run beginning with a Pankratz free throw and ending with a Pankratz layup put the Vikes ahead by 20, 33-13, with three minutes remaining until halftime.
- Though the Vikes were scoreless for the final three minutes of the quarter, they held the Griffins to just five points in that time to take a 33-18 lead into the halftime break.
- Holding MacEwan scoreless for a five-minute stretch in the third quarter, the Vikes scored 17 points in that stretch ending with a Karis de Paiva layup for a 54-20 lead with 3:40 remaining in the third.
- A layup by White finalized the third quarter score at 60-25 in favour of the Vikes.
- Pushing the lead to over 40 points in the fourth quarter, a jumper from Meike Boerstra put the Vikes in front 66-25 with 5:54 left to play.
- Remaining in control for the final minutes, the Vikes came away with the 75-33 win.
WORTH NOTING
- Pankratz led the Vikes with 18 points, adding a career-high 15 rebounds for her second double-double of the season, along with a team-high four steals and two assists for the Vikes.
- Becker added a double-double of her own with 14 points and 10 rebounds, her fourth of the year. She added three assists and three steals in the win.
- Anderson recorded a 10-point night for the Vikes, also grabbing seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
- MacEwan's 33 points are the fewest the Vikes have allowed to an opponent this season.
- The Vikes improve to 7-10 on the year with the win, while the Griffins fall to 1-18 with the loss.
