Victoria – University of Victoria's rising stars, second-year field hockey player
Julia Boraston and U SPORTS Rookie of the Year
Rebecca Stone will don Canada's colours on home turf this July at the 2024 Field Hockey Junior Pan Am Cup.
Following a selection camp in Vancouver, Boraston and Stone earned spots on Canada's U20 national team roster, eyeing both a continental championship podium and a coveted berth at the FIH Junior World Cup.
The tournament, previously hosted in Canada in 2016 in Toronto, will take place July 3-12, at Tamanawis Park in Surrey, BC. This is the second time that Canada will host the event.
A Mount Douglas Secondary School graduate, Boraston is a returner from Canada's U21 Junior World Cup team that clinched fourth place in Santiago, Chile, last December and brings seasoned leadership to a young but talented squad.
For Stone, a St. Michael's University School alumna, this will be her first time representing Canada and competing on an international stage. A newcomer to the junior national program, Stone had an outstanding rookie debut with the Vikes, helping the team earn it's fifth consecutive U SPORTS championship and earning Canada West, U SPORTS, and UVic Vikes Rookie of the Year honours.
"JB [Julia] is one of the group's more experienced players, having represented Canada and been on multiple tours with the team. This will be a good opportunity for her to take a leadership role," said
Krista Thompson, UVic women's field hockey coach.
"Rebecca has worked really hard, and I'm happy she gave herself a shot to play at this level. I've said it before, but she is a generational talent, and I look forward to seeing her grow from this experience," she continued.
For these teams, they have a chance to build on what is becoming a rich tradition for Canadian junior national teams. Over the last two junior cycles, both Canadian junior teams qualified for back-to-back Junior World Cups – the first time in Canadian history that they've achieved that feat for both divisions. Now is a chance to repeat qualification and make it a third consecutive for both teams.
The Canadian women kick things off on July 3 at 6:00 p.m. PST, and will face Chile in their opening match.
