VICTORIA – University of Victoria rowers
Giancarlo DiPompeo,
Danica Ariano, Gabrielle Keiser, and
Mikaela Holthuis are returning home as medalists from the FISU World University Rowing Championship, which took place in Rotterdam, Netherlands, from July 3-6.
DiPompeo, who has emerged as a powerhouse in the men's lightweight field, finished with a silver medal in the men's lightweight skulls division—following in the footsteps of former Vike and Olympian
Patrick Keane. This race marked the first time DiPompeo, the current Canadian University Rowing Championship (CURC) gold medalist, has raced a single skull internationally.
On the women's side, the women's eight, which included
Danica Ariano, Gabrielle Keiser, and
Mikaela Holthuis, secured the bronze medal in a tight race against Italy, which took silver, and the USA, which took gold.
Additional notable performances included the men's eight featuring
Connor Attridge,
Jesse Harold,
Victor Lefebvre, Samuel Ree,
Quinn Storey, and
Sascha Jansen-Rudan, who finished in fourth place, narrowly missing out on the podium behind Italy.
In the men's pair and arguably one of the most competitive fields,
Kai Bartel and
Michael Caryk finished in second place in the B final, while
Natalya Ariano and teammate Julia Schuurmans followed suit, earning a second-place finish in the women's B final.
