Vancouver, B.C. – The University of Victoria men's rugby team fought hard against the University of British Columbia, but ultimately fell to the Thunderbirds, 44-33, Sept. 14 at the Gerald McGavin UBC Rugby Centre.

UBC puts first two scores on the board
- The Thunderbirds struck in the seventh and 15th minutes to take a 12-0 lead to open the game.
Vikes charge back to take the lead
- Taking advantage of being a man up following a UBC yellow card, a 25th minute try from Sion Griffiths and convert by Angus Boyd-Porter put the Vikes on the board, 12-7.
- Two minutes later, a breakaway from Ethan Smith resulted in a penalty try for the Vikes after Smith was tackled high by the UBC defender, putting the Vikes in front, 14-12, in the 27th minute.
Victoria responds to UBC's try to hold halftime lead
- Though UBC scored once more in the 35th minute to take a 19-14 lead, a Morgan Di Nardo breakaway try in the 38th minute followed by a Boyd-Porter convert put the Vikes back in the lead, 21-19.
- In the final play of the first half, Boyd-Porter found an opening and ran the ball in for the try. Also taking the convert attempt, Boyd-Porter was successful to give UVic a 28-19 lead at the half.
UBC takes the lead out the break
- Three-straight Thunderbird scores opened the second half, putting the home side back on top, 36-28 in the 62nd minute.
Gamage's score concludes Vikes' scoring
- Chris Gamage's quick tap-and-go in the 65th minute resulted in the final try of the day for the Vikes, bringing UBC's lead down to three, 36-33.
Thunderbirds close out win
- UBC added a try and penalty goal over the final 15 minutes of play to take a 44-33 win.
WORTH NOTING
- Angus Boyd-Porter led the Vikes with 11 points, bringing his season total to 13 points.
- Sion Griffiths and Morgan Di Nardo each recorded their first tries of the season, while Chris Gamage scored his second of the year.
- The Vikes move to 0-2 on the year after the loss, while UBC improves to 2-0.
