Vikes dominate first-half leads to win over James Bay

Victoria, BC – The University of Victoria men's rugby defeated James Bay AA 31-26, Nov. 28 at Centennial Stadium.
 
The first half was all Vikes.
  • Victoria started the game on the attack as they burst down the field near the James Bay try line. The Vikes used their power to force their way over for the first try of the match. With the conversion, the Vikes jumped out to an early 7-0 lead.
  • In the 29th minute, the Vikes went on the attack again, scoring their second straight try to extend their lead out to 14 points.
  • The Vikes continued their offensive dominance as they pushed their way over the James Bay try zone line once again. With Gareth Sandner's conversion, the Vikes' lead was lengthened to 21-0.
  • Ryder Heaney-Corns scored the Vikes' fourth consecutive try as he added on to the Vikes' large first-half lead.
  • As the first half neared a close, James Bay scored its first try of the game and cut into the Vikes' 28-7 lead.
 
James Bay made it a game in the second half.
  • The second half began with James Bay using the momentum of their late first-half score to burst over the try line for another. Their second try of the game tightened the game to 28-14.
  • James Bay scored once again in the 73rd minute. This made it a one-score game as the game neared its end.
  • In the 78th minute, Gareth Sandner executed on a long penalty goal, giving their lead more cushion in the dying minutes of the game.
 
The Vikes will return to action to host the Castaway Wanderers, Dec. 6 at 2:30 p.m.
