Pronghorns take series over Vikes

Lethbridge, Alta. – The University of Victoria women's basketball team was unable to stop a second half comeback effort from the University of Lethbridge, falling in game two the Pronghorns, 66-60, Feb. 1 to close the road series.
 
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Vikes jump to early lead in first
  • An 8-0 run for the Vikes in the first on three Abigail Becker layups and a Tana Pankratz free throw put the visiting side ahead, 11-4, with 4:44 to go in the opening frame.
  • Continuing to build their lead, Jenna Talib came in off the bench and hit a three-pointer seven seconds later to give the Vikes the 11-point advantage, 20-9, with 1:47 to go.
  • Layups from Joaleah Tupas-Singh and Becker in the final minute was met by one from Lethbridge at the buzzer to bring the first quarter score to 24-11 in favour of the Vikes.
Lead remains with Vikes at halftime
  • Jade Dittmer gave the Vikes their largest lead of the game, 33-16, at the 5:26 mark of the second quarter after nailing a three.
  • Lethbridge began to claw back over the final four minutes of the half, scoring 11 points to the Vikes' lone three from Bella Graves in that time to bring UVic's lead down to seven, 40-33, at halftime.
Pronghorns take lead in final seconds of third, hold on through fourth
  • The Vikes were able to match the Pronghorns' scoring in the early minutes of the third. A layup from Becker kept the Vikes' lead at seven, 47-40, with 6:33 to go.
  • After both sides went scoreless for three minutes, Lethbridge broke their drought first, outscoring the Vikes 10-2 in the final three and a half minutes culminating with a layup in the final seconds to take a 50-49 lead at the end of the third.
  • Though the Pronghorns remained in front to start the fourth quarter, seven Vikes points from a Talib three-pointer, Becker layup, and Natalie Allison jumper brought the Vikes back even, 56-56, with 5:44 to go.
  • Victoria would be plagued by another scoreless stretch over the next four and a half minutes, allowing Lethbridge to take a 10-point lead, 66-56, with 1:17 still on the clock.
  • The Vikes saw free throws from Tupas-Singh, Becker, and Dittmer in the final minute of play, but it was not enough to catch up to Lethbridge and ultimately fell to the Pronghorns, 66-60.
WORTH NOTING
  • Abigail Becker led the Vikes with a season-high 21 points. She added nine rebounds, two assists, and one steal for Victoria.
  • Jade Dittmer and Jenna Talib each recorded season-high scoring performances with nine and eight points, respectively. 
  • Karis de Paiva led the Vikes with 11 rebounds, which ties her season-high, while Joaleah Tupas-Singh was close behind with a career-high nine boards.
  • The Vikes move to 9-7 on the year while the Pronghorns improve to 8-8 with the win.
